VA Comicon is OCT. 29-30

Curls Studio will be exhibiting in the Small Press Pavilion of Terror this coming weekend at VA Comicon. This is the show's 25th anniversary and our first time exhibiting at VA Comicon. The main reason why we wanted to be at this show is because James O'Barr, creator of The Crow, will be there.
The VA Comicon is at the Crowne Plaza West (6531 West Broad Street, Richmond, VA 23230) on Saturday and Sunday October 29-30 from 10AM to 4PM! There will be a Costume Contest Sunday afternoon with $500 in cash prizes! Admission is only $10 for the whole weekend and children under 12 are free with a paying adult.
I will have large 12" x 12" prints of some of my more haunting Sketch Before Sleep illustrations on matte linen paper available for purchase: Beetlejuice, Elvira, Shrunken Head Guy from Beetlejuice, Frankenstein, Uncle Fester...

In addition Joe and I will be speaking at "Small Press Chit-Chat" with Dan Nokes on Sunday from 11:30 to 11:55AM. View the programming schedule in the image above to find out more.

Small Press Pavilion of Terror: James O’Barr, Blue Milk Special, Mark Bode, Dan Fogel, Chris Otto, Curls Studio, Iconograph Studios, Jason Crawley, Bill Meiggs, Bill McKay, Daniel Govar, Dan Nokes/21st Century Sandshark Studios, Jesse Cowan, Matt Slay
Come in costume - let's make it fun! We hope to see you there in all your spookiness.

The Geek of Oz: 2010 - A Geek Odyssey

Ryan Huff from Sydney, Australia has interviewed Brian Michael Bendis, Deb Aoki, Victor Gischler, Irish Emmet, Carolyn Belefski, Jeff Parker, Christopher "Great" Scott, and Chris Samnee about the year 2010 and what we look forward to in 2011.

Read all the interviews here: http://www.geekofoz.com/2010/12/2010-geek-odyssey.html
In addition to this interview, I want to point out that my answer for "What would you like to find in your Christmas stocking?" is a current storyline in my Curls Webcomic: http://www.curls-studio.com/curls/?p=903
Holiday Greeting Card Illustration
A former co-worker of mine commissioned me to illustrate her family's 2010 Holiday Greeting Card. She provided me with photos of her two cats and one dog to work from.
Here is the process from original small sketch layout and more detailed sketch to inks to colors:

The client and her husband are really excited about the illustration and how their girls were portrayed, which makes me happy because I gave each animal a character and attitude as they have fun together sledding in the snow.
Available for Freelance Work
If you are a creative director, art director or designer interested in my illustration and/or design skills, please email me at info@curls-studio.com.

Wrapping Up 2010 and Holiday Heist Map
Curls Studio has been having a busy 2010. This past Wednesday, "In Between the Panels: DC’s Emergence on the Graphic Novel Scene" was held at Busboy and Poets, sponsored by the Women’s National Book Association. The panel was filmed by Astray Productions and will be posted soon. In addition, we are also planning on posting film and audio from our panel "The Other Side of the Table: Lessons from Creators" which took place earlier this year at New York Comic Con.
Check out this coverage from "In Between the Panels: DC’s Emergence on the Graphic Novel Scene" from Comicsgirl. I will also be posting a blog recap with a few photos when we get the film footage ready. Until then you can join us this Sunday for Holiday Heist!

We even have a handy vendor map for you. And if I can find it quickly in storage I just might be wearing a Santa hat, like Curls in this map. See you at Holiday Heist and if you have any suggestions or recommendations for 2011 tour stops, please let us know. Thanks.

Get in the Holiday Spirit!

Enjoy these Curls comic strips. If you click on the top comic you can see it animated in full glory. I have to say this is a great use of an animated gif... if I do say so myself! The one below with the reindeer is actually based on a real experience. On Saturday I looked out the window of my home and saw a giant deer with full antlers! I believe his name is Prancer.

Curls at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade!

Earlier this morning Curls was at the 82nd Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade! She celebrated with her friends Toast of the Town and Pitter Patter, the penguin... they were in balloon form on the parade route.
This, my friends, is my dream and lifetime goal... to have one (or more!) of my characters I created to be larger-than-life balloons at the Macy's Parade! So continue to watch this space for the future.
Happy Thanksgiving from Curls Studio!
