Recap: District Comics Signing at One More Page

The massive team that helped to create District Comics: An Unconventional History of Washington, DC gathered last Sunday, August 19, 2012 for a book signing at One More Page Books in Arlington, Virginia. Led by editor Matt Dembicki, the contributors to the book signed for two hours. The first 25 people to purchase books received one day pass vouchers to attend Small Press Expo in September.

There were over than 20 contributors on hand to sign, including: Rebecca Goldfield, Jacob Warrenfeltz, Tabitha Whissemore, Art Haupt, Jason Rodriguez, Andrew Cohen, Rand Arrington, Mal Jones, Mike Rhode, Rafer Roberts, Gregory Robison, Joe Carabeo, Carolyn Belefski, Jeff Barrus, Michael Cowgill, Dale Rawlings, Michael Brace, Steve Loya, Kevin Rechin, Paul Zdepski, Matt Dembicki, and Carol Dembicki

Here is what the Huffington Post had to say about District Comics, as well as an interview with Matt Dembicki: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/08/17/district-comics-matt-dembicki_n_1796591.html

The team of Carolyn Belefski and Joe Carabeo (Curls Studio) wrote and illustrated the story "Spytini" about Elizabeth Bentley, an American spy for the Soviet Union from 1938 until 1945. She was known as "the Red Spy Queen" and frequently hung out at Martin's Tavern in Georgetown. We hope you grab a copy of District Comics for yourself so you can read our tale about her. The book can be found at fine bookstores or you can order it now on Amazon, currently for $16.47 (list price $24.95).

There will be more upcoming events regarding District Comics, so please stay glued to this blog as more information is released. You can view more photos of the event on the Curls Studio Facebook page here.

Thanks to One More Page Books for hosting such a great event! Thanks to Drew Crowder for the last photo.

Recap: DC Zinefest 2012

On July 28, 2012 I exhibited at DC Zinefest. I believe DC has had zinefests perhaps over a decade or longer ago, but as far as I know this has been the 2nd year of this version of the DC Zinefest. You can read last year's recap here. This year was similar in terms of location and the same time of year, which is good to build a steady presence as event promotion. A highlight as an exhibitor was that the organizers were kind enough to collaborate with Everlasting Life Cafe to provide free vegan lunch to all exhibitors. Getting a free lunch doesn't happen very often, so I was excited that the event planners were able to arrange this.

I got to chat with Liz Suburbia, Katie Omberg, Deanna Echanique, Full Sanction, Rob from Panel Patter (here is his DC Zinefest Recap), and a bunch of new faces. There seemed to be a lot of zinesters from Philly and other cities that made the travel to DC for the show.

Another highlight was premiering the brand new issue of Magic Bullet #5, Washington, DC's comics newspaper. This is the first time the issue had a theme - and since it's 2012 - we all did a spin on "The End of The World." Joe Carabeo and I did a Black Magic Tales story on the center spread in color. Be on the lookout for the newspaper around town. Curls Studio will have them at Baltimore Comic-Con, SPX, NYCC, and a bunch of future events we plan to be at. I have some more announcements to make soon about future issues of Magic Bullet. Stay 'tooned.

Thanks to Rusty from Full Sanction for the photograph.

I will be at the book signing and hope to see you there! Here is the Facebook event page so you can RSVP and tell your friends.

Recap: Team Cul de Sac Book Signing at Politics & Prose

On July 11, 2012, I attended the second book signing for Team Cul de Sac at Politics & Prose in Washington, DC (read more about the first signing and launch party here).

If you don't know about Team Cul de Sac, you can read more about the project in their blog here, but it is a group of cartoonists lead by project organizer, Chris Sparks, who created some cartoons and illustrations to honor Richard Thompson and his comic strip, Cul de Sac. Richard is a great cartoonist... so great even that he won the National Cartoonists Society Reuben Award for "Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year" in 2010! Unfortunately, he has also been recently diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.

All of the original art for the Team Cul de Sac book was auctioned off earlier this year thru Heritage Auctions. You can still purchase the lovely Team Cul de Sac: Cartoonists Draw the Line at Parkinson’s book thru Sparking Design or Amazon to help the cause because the team is connected to the Michael J. Fox Foundation and some of the proceeds go toward Parkinson's research.

The second signing included a presentation by Chris Sparks and speech by Nick Galiļ¬anakis. I was happy Richard was also there in attendance. We signed books for almost two hours and really enjoyed meeting everyone who came to support. Thanks to Barbara Sutliff for the photo of the contributors sign and Steve and Kathy Artley for the photo of the team signing books.

If we do any more events, I'll be sure to let you know about them. For now, enjoy this photo gallery from this event: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10151047817727381.451263.50763422380&type=1
