Last Saturday, May 11 was Curls Studio's first appearance at ANS Sci-Fi & Comic Con, now in its second year. We were stationed next to Frank Cho, which was an honor because we enjoy his Liberty Meadows work very much.
The best thing about this convention was meeting new people and other creators. Joe and I took part in a "Making Comics" panel with Liz & Jimmy Reed, Leanne & Rod Hannah, Sarah Hoppes, and Chris Rizzo. The location was a classroom setting, but the conversation quickly because informal.
After the convention we got to spend some quality time with our pal, Adam. We also loved the fact that Frank Cho was the guest of honor at a Catholic school.
Thanks to Tom for organizing the show and supporting Magic Bullet by placing an ad in Magic Bullet #6.

Starburst Magazine: All Comics Are Created Equal

My comic strip Curls was mentioned today in the column "Adventures On Alternate Earths" by P.M. Buchan in Starburst Magazine, the UK's longest running Sci-Fi magazine, first published 1978.
The article is titled "All Comics Are Created Equal" and features Lizz Lizz, Adam Cadwell, Andi Ewington, Marc Ellerby, Rachel Pandich, and many more creators to discover!
Please read the full article here: http://www.starburstmagazine.com/columns/adventures-on-alternative-earths/753-all-comics-are-created-equal
I respect that even though it's not the author's cup-of-tea, he is able to see the appeal:
"On a completely different note, I’ve been talking to artist Carolyn Belefski about her webcomic Curls recently and she could seriously teach you a thing or two about self-promotion! Given my fondness for Maakies and Hubert Selby Jr novels it shouldn’t come as a surprise that I found Curls too innocent and lighthearted for my taste, but damn that lady can draw! With an art style reminiscent of Frank Cho’s Liberty Meadows Carolyn has an accomplished pen that was made to draw nationally syndicated newspaper strips. Working on the assumption that not all of my readers can be black-hearted cynics like me then some of you are going to LOVE Curls because it’s an adorable strip featuring a character shaped like a piece of toast and if there’s any justice in the world Carolyn will get the chance to keep on making comics like this for the rest of her life and have them collated into massive telephone-directory sized books."
What a great quote. Thank you so much to Starburst Magazine and P.M. Buchan.

Recap: Inaugural DC Comicon
On Sunday, May 2nd, 2010 Curls Studio had a table at the Inaugural DC Comicon at George Mason University. It was a fun time and we had good sales. Plus, we got to meet a lot of new people that usually attend the Capicon shows, so it was great to reach out to them and expand our base. Many people found out about this show last minute and heck, we found out we had a table only two days earlier, but there was still a solid turn out. I hope the show continues to expand if they decide to do it again next year. There is great possibility with a Washington, DC convention, especially in the spring, as not to compete with Baltimore Comic-Con. Having Frank Cho there was also a bonus!

We got filmed for Washington Full Circle and that was exciting to have our banners in their show opening shot. We'll have to stay tuned for the footage.

Here is a sketch commission I did of Gwen LeGette from The Legettes.

I also got to meet Black Wolverine. He posed with Toast of the Town and I.
