We Are Monsters - MASER Sneak Peek

Above is a sneak peek of my monster, MASER, specifically made for the exhibit We Are Monsters.

I will be posting new facts about MASER weekdays on my Twitter account leading up to the opening on May 6. Follow me @CarolynBelefski. Today we learned "he eats gravel and will kill you in your sleep if you call him cute."

We Are Monsters features a hand-picked group of over twenty artists, illustrators, and designers who are bringing their beasts to the heart of DC. Dual heads, third-eyes, cloven hoofs, purple fur, and forked tongues will be found in obscene abundance. Media will include painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, maybe even a little video. Opening Friday, May 6, from 7–9PM at Pleasant Plains Workshop, 2608 Georgia Avenue, NW.

Artists include: Marc Crisafulli, Carolyn Belefski, Greg Pizzoli, Dana Jeri Maier, Antonio Peters, Adam Dwight, Elizabeth Graeber, John Foster, Rich Bernett, Tim Gibbon, Melinda Rainsberger, Catherine Smith, Josh Dihle, Mike O'Brien, Allison Glancey, Ivan Anic, Evan Keeling, Kristina Bilonick, Stephanie Kwak, Steve Loya , Jodi Hoover , Lisa Adang, Pia Blumenthal, Anthony Dihle

You can RSVP and invite your friends to the event using Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=155052164558904

Thanks to Anthony Dihle and Kristina Bilonick for hosting the show.

The Legettes Silkscreened T- Shirt

If you have been to the Curls Studio Etsy Store, this could be old news to you... but I have never written about this project for the blog and just realized it really should be given attention. Why? Because this project pretty much rocks. It started over two years ago when I created this shirt featuring the title characters from The Legettes comic book I make with Joe Carabeo. The shirt premiered at New York Comic Con in April of 2009. I know it was a hit when J. Scott Campbell commented how cool the shirt was in-person to me. (It would really be great if one day he did a pin-up of The Legettes!)

Fast forward to a few months ago... Joe and I did a photo shoot with the lovely burlesque dancer Dolli Holiday to feature the shirt design. As you can see the results are amazing. Dolli looks like a real-life Gwen LeGette and we had a blast working together. Definitely check her performances with Richmond Varietease and The Garter Snaps when you have the chance!

As far as the shirts go, act fast. Small size is SOLD OUT. Current available inventory: 1 medium navy, 2 large navy, 4 large green

Get yours today at the Curls Studio Etsy Store.

VCU Libraries Digital Collections

I was recently informed by someone who works for Virginia Commonwealth University Libraries that: "VCU put all the Commonwealth Times issues online (I was the lucky person who removed the archived collection from their bindings and prepared them for digitization) so you can you can find all your Curls adventures as a Ram here! :)"

http://dig.library.vcu.edu/cdm4/index_com.php?CISOROOT=/com

For those of you who do not know, I have a webcomic called Curls, which got it's start in VCU's student newspaper, The Commonwealth Times, published in print every Monday and Thursday. You can now search the database of VCU Libraries Digital Collections to read my Curls strips from 2002 to 2004.

Now I publish Curls on the web every Monday and Thursday in honor of the original publication days. You can read Curls here: http://www.curls-studio.com/curls

Recap: Capicons (April 10)

Curls Studio was a guest at the April 10, 2011 Capicons Comic Book & Pop Culture Con at Dunn Loring Volunteer Fire Hall in Dunn Loring, VA along with Rafer Roberts and RM Rhodes.

It was a fun time. I met some interesting new comics fans and ate two doughnuts. I also purchased a Thorn (Bone) action figure for only $3. We gave away many free issues of Magic Bullet. Thanks to Capicons for having us and thanks to all who attended and talked to us!

More photos can be found on our Facebook Fan Page. "Like" us already, will ya?

Magic Bullet #2 - Washington DC's Comics Newspaper

Last August, Washington DC's Comics Newspaper - Magic Bullet - was launched with issue #1. Now Magic Bullet #2 has hit the streets... literally. Last Monday, members of DC Conspiracy, a collective of local comic-book creators and enthusiasts, were at Metro and MARC stations handing out copies. If you don't commute via mass transportation in the DC area, don't fret. Check out Magic Bullet sightings, a handy Google Maps page with many shops and establishments where the newspaper can be found.

Curls Studio has a Black Magic Tales story in Magic Bullet #2, titled "Good Enough." Above is a small image of Curls Studio's comic. I will post a larger image once the printed newspaper has had it's run, but for now if you want to read the comic, make some effort and hunt down a copy of Magic Bullet. Speaking of which, you will be able to get your hands on one at Capicons on Sunday, April 10, 2011 at Dunn Loring Volunteer Fire Hall from 10AM to 3PM. I'll be there for sure. See you there!
